River Rock Borders and Summer Shrub Pruning Done Right

Mulch creeping onto the driveway is one of those things that seems minor - until it becomes a constant annoyance. A well-placed river rock border solves that problem for good. It holds the bed material in place, keeps the edge crisp, and honestly just looks sharp against a concrete driveway.

That's exactly what we tackled here. We laid a clean river rock border along the bed edge and followed it up with a full shrub pruning. The mix of plants in this bed - ornamental grasses, low mounding shrubs, Japanese maple, and a sprawling pine - each needed a different hand. You can't just run a hedge trimmer through a bed like this and call it done.

Good pruning is about understanding how each plant grows. Some of the shrubs here needed their shape tightened up. Others just needed the overgrowth pulled back so they weren't spilling onto the driveway or crowding their neighbors.
