Fruit trees are a lot like anything else in a garden - neglect them long enough and they start working against you. Too much old wood, too many crossing branches, growth going every direction. The tree keeps putting out energy, but none of it goes where it matters. Fruit production drops. The canopy gets dense and messy. That's exactly the kind of situation where a hard prune makes sense.

This was a longtime client's garden, which is always a good starting point. We knew the tree's history, and we knew it was ready for something more aggressive than a light tidy. Going dormant is the right window for this kind of work - the structure is fully visible and the tree isn't actively pushing energy into leaves or fruit. You can actually see what you're dealing with.

A hard prune isn't just hacking things back. It's about reading the tree. Which scaffold branches are worth keeping? Where is the canopy too crowded to let light in? What needs to go entirely versus what just needs shortening? We took out a significant amount of material - old crossing limbs, upright watersprouts, anything competing with the main structure. What's left is an open, well-balanced framework the tree can actually grow from.

The payoff from this kind of work shows up down the road. Better light penetration, stronger new growth, and eventually - more fruit on shorter, manageable branches. That's the whole point. If your fruit tree has gotten leggy, unproductive, or just looks like it's been left to its own devices for a few years too many, it's worth having someone take a proper look at it.

We handle fruit tree pruning as part of our broader pruning and trimming work. Whether it's a single tree or a full garden that needs attention, we're used to working with long-term clients and returning year after year to see how things are coming along. That kind of continuity makes a real difference in how well your trees perform over time.
