Here's a good example of how a single well-placed garden bed can change the entire feel of a front yard. We were working with a big, beautiful mature tree - the kind that dominates the yard but wasn't really being used as a focal point. The ground underneath was patchy and tired. The goal was to build something around it that felt intentional.

We started by cutting a smooth, curved bed line around the base of the tree. Getting that shape right matters more than most people think. A clean, flowing edge is what separates a bed that looks designed from one that just looks dug up. From there, we laid the bed out with fresh soil and dark mulch before a single plant went in.

The plant layout was planned before anything got put in the ground. Ferns for structure and shade tolerance, ornamental grasses for height and movement, and purple catmint to bring in some color and soften the edges. Each variety was chosen with this specific spot in mind - the canopy shade, the soil conditions, the scale of the tree. Nothing was just dropped in randomly.

This is part one of a bigger garden installation for this yard, and even at this stage it's already doing a lot of work. The bed gives the tree a proper setting and pulls the whole front yard together. It's the kind of change that's hard to unsee once it's done - the yard just feels more finished, more put-together.

A well-executed landscape installation like this isn't just about looks either. Mulched beds reduce weeds, retain moisture, and protect tree roots. So there's real function behind it too. We're looking forward to watching this one fill in and seeing the full picture come together.
