This one was a full front yard garden installation - the kind of job we really enjoy. The space had a large mature tree anchoring the yard, but the beds around it were tired and flat. No color, no texture, no life. That's exactly the kind of blank canvas we work well with.
We started by laying out all the new plants before a single hole was dug. Ferns, ornamental grasses, low-growing shrubs, heuchera - a good mix of textures that will layer nicely as everything fills in. Getting the layout right before planting saves a lot of second-guessing later, and it lets us see how the plants will relate to each other and to the existing hardscape and tree root zone.
Once the planting was done, fresh dark mulch went in around everything. That's not just for looks - though it does clean things up fast. Mulch holds moisture, suppresses weeds, and gives new roots a better environment to get established. It also gives the whole bed a finished, intentional look that ties the space together.
The area under and around the mature tree got its own dedicated bed with a clean, curved edge. Shade-tolerant plants went in there - ferns and low spreaders that will actually thrive in that spot rather than struggle against it. Matching the plant selection to the actual growing conditions is something we pay close attention to on every landscape installation we do. It's the difference between plants that take off and plants that just sit there.
What we ended up with is a yard that has shape, color variation, and a clean finish from the street. The kind of space that's easy to enjoy every day without a lot of ongoing effort to maintain.
